History: Virginia was home to many Native American tribes before the arrival of several European explorers. In 1607, Jamestown was established as the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. Despite the challenges of colonial life there, more settlers arrived and began to cultivate tobacco crops to market to and satisfy European demand. To meet production needs, colonists brought in slaves and indentured servants to work the plantations in 1619, launching the institution of slavery. Virginia became a crown colony of Britain in 1624. Multiple conflicts ensued over independence from Britain and the status of local Native American tribes, indentured servants, and slaves. Ultimately, after the resolutions of the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, and the Civil War, Virginia rejoined the Union in 1788.
