Her high school accomplishments included being selected First Team MVC in basketball and volleyball three times, being named First Team All-State in basketball, volleyball, and track twice each, and being named First Team All-American in basketball after her senior season. Ms. Herrig later starred at the University of Iowa, playing on three Big Ten Championship teams, earning First Team All-Big Ten her senior year. Amy was drafted by the Sacramento Monarchs of the WNBA and completed three professional seasons.

Dion Kempthorne

Dion Kempthorne graduated from Dubuque Senior in 1959. While at Senior, Mr. Kempthorne lettered in football, wrestling, and baseball. He was named First Team All-Conference twice, Third Team All-State after his senior season, and was selected as the Outstanding Iowa Athlete in 1959. After high school, Dion attended the University of Wisconsin where he was the starting guard and linebacker for the 1962 Big Ten Champions and 1963 Rose Bowl team. Mr. Kempthorne received his doctorate in English in 1973 and had a distinguished teaching career at the college level before retiring in 2001.

Crystal Henkes Neuhaus graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1978 and attended the University of Iowa on an athletic scholarship. At Dubuque Senior, Crystal Henkes Neuhaus starred in volleyball, softball, and basketball – earning a total of eight Major D’s. Champion teams in 1976 and ’77. In volleyball, she was named both First Team All-State and High School All-American, after starting on State Volleyball Runner-Up Teams in 1974, ’75, and ’77.

Ralph Richman

Ralph Richman graduated from Dubuque Senior in 1949 after earning the maximum nine Major D’s: three each in football, basketball, and track. On the football field, Richman was a threat to score at anytime. He was considered a top triple threat because of his talent for running, passing, and kicking while leading the Rams. His end zone-to-end zone punt is still part of Senior’s sports lore. Track is the sport, however, that showcased Mr. Richman’s brilliant talent and world-class speed. Ralph was a Drake Relays 100 yd. Dash champion and eventually set school records of 9.8 seconds in the 100 yd. Dash and 22.9 seconds in the 220. He also tied the state record of 5.4 seconds in the 50 yard dash.

Gail Skinner Hodge led the Rams to the State Volleyball title in 1973 in only the second season that volleyball was a varsity sport at the school. A 1974 graduate of Dubuque Senior, Gail was team Captain, a member of the 1973 State All-Tournament volleyball team, and an All-State selection. Mrs. Skinner Hodge accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Iowa where she was a four-year starter, three time Team Captain, and the first recipient of the “Most All-Round Team Player Award”. After graduation in 1979, Gail earned her Masters Degree from Clarke College. She has coached volleyball at the high school and college levels and continues to coach in Dubuque in the Court Masters Club Program.

After high school, Mr. Sloan became a Captain in the Army Air Corps. While flying with the legendary Flying Tigers, he served in the China, Burma, and India theaters. After the war, he served as national president of the prestigious Flying Tigers Organization, and he was one of the founding members of the President Truman Library in Independence, MO. For over forty years, Mr. Sloan was the leader of the Life and Medical Insurance Company of Kansas City, MO. Mr. Sloan passed away in 1996.
